That’s so awesome, Ryan! June 2017 | 5 Subscribe today at juniorgolfmag.net LetYourPresenceCommandAttention BY DR. JAMES CIMA W atch any great athlete and you’ll see that, the minute they make their entrance on the field, driving range, ice rinkorcourt, everyone looks in their direction. That athlete, recognizable or not, ex- udes confidence, success and the right body language to command attention. How can you create that same body language for suc- cess? Here are three of the most important ways. DRESSTHE PART Make it your goal to dress better than all of your com- petitors. Whatever type of professional you want to be – golfer, doctor, lawyer, architect – looking your best is the first step to actually performing your best. It doesn’t take a lot of money to put your best foot for- ward in this area. It just takes some insight and a little bit of planning. Make sure your clothes are an honest reflection of you, so you feel comfortable in your ap- pearance and your image. You’ll feel better when you look in the mirror or when others look at you. STANDTALLWITH EXCELLENTPOSTURE My father always told me to stand tall, walk tall and be tall. That’s tough when you are 5 feet, 2 inches and weight 112 pounds, but I knew at the time what my dad was talking about. This helped me tremendously in all of the sports I played. In fact, it changed the direction of my life, and that was one of the reasons I became a chiropractic physician. With excellent posture, your body functions at a higher level and you have a greater chance of making a perfect swing. EXERCISE Most superior athletes in all sports realize the impor- tance of exercise. When you look at a golfer who is in great shape, and you are not, you already feel at a disadvantage on the first tee. So what does exercise do for you? • Increases flexibility – Increasing your flexibility, especially when you are young, will allow your body to lengthen more easily, thus helping to increase your height during your growing years. • Maximizes strength – When I started to exercise, I began to feel the power of increased strength and what it could do for me. Combining that new strength with increased flexibility, I enjoyed greater distance and accuracy with all of my clubs. But it went further than the golf course, extending to other areas of my life. Now I always strive to be at least twice as strong as my daily activities require. • Reduces risk of injury – You never want an injury that will prevent you from playing your best or, even worse, end your career as it has for many well-known players. Some injuries can become chronic, causing you pain and discomfort throughout your life. • Builds stamina – Golf tournaments are grueling, and you have to be mentally and physically on top of your game to survive four rounds of competi- tive golf. Remember, you need as much energy on the 18th hole or the 72nd as you do on the 1st . • Enhances sleep – Sleeping well allows your body to grow properly. That’s because your body repairs and rebuilds itself while you are sleeping, and the process is more effective when that sleep is deep and uninterrupted. There you have it. If you dress for success, stand tall and exercise regularly, you will be well on your way to commanding attention with your presence – both on and off the golf course. So what are you waiting for? Start today, and all eyes will soon be looking your way. Dr. James Cima heads the Cima Health and Wellness Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
