After their son Ben was diagnosed with autism, Ernie and his wife, Liezl, decided to take steps toward enhancing the quality of life for him and oth- ers in the autism community. They worked together to create The Els Center of Excel- lence, which has already positively impacted hundreds of autistic individuals and their families. I had the pleasure of visiting this facility, lo- cated in Jupiter, Florida. On the tour, Pam Minelli, The Center’s Director of Devel- opment, explained the intricate details that make the school the great success that it is today. In an observation room, we watched children learn to grow in a nurturing envi- ronment. The ratio of teachers to students ensures that each individual’s needs are met. Pam explained many of the subtle differences that make it such a positive atmosphere, such as higher windows, LED lights (to limit the noise and flickering that is common with flu- orescent tubes) and soundproof walls – all intended to limit distractions. Ernie and Liezl have developed an interna- tional program where children can spend a week or two on the grounds, be assessed by professionals and receive a professionally de- signed developmental game plan for use at home. Beyond the classroom, the schools offer a nine-hole golf course that helps the children strengthen communication, along with their social, self-regulatory and motor skills. Golf Challenge Development Manager Jen Hong explained that The Center’s 12-session pro- gram focuses on four basic concepts: distance control, aiming at the target, building a rou- tine and getting the ball in the air. A larger hole is also used, to instill in the children a strong level of confidence. This program is now being used globally to better the lives of individuals with special needs. Ernie and Liezl spoke candidly about The Center and their plans for its future. Here are some of their thoughts. 22 | December 2017 #juniorgolfmag Visit us at juniorgolfmag.net The Els family shares a light moment together Ernie Els and his son, Ben
