But that’s how it ultimately has turned out for University of Florida golfer Sam Horsfield, one of the most exciting new talents in the game. Sam and his parents had been visiting at their vacation home in Davenport, Florida, when a day at the local amusement park ended early. Looking for something else to do, he asked his father if they could play golf at the Highlands Reserve golf course nearby and he caught the bug. Upon their return to England and a broken heating system later, Mr. Horsfield moved his family permanently to the warmer climes of Florida. Since then, 19-year-old Sam has rarely missed a day at the course, wherever that might be. At 16, he won the Florida State Amateur by 11 shots, and in 2015 he competed in the U.S. Open Championship. Sam has shot competitive rounds of 60 and 61 and, as the Mickelson Award winner for top freshman golfer of the year, he’s the leader of an outstanding Florida Gators golf team that features a number of exceptional players. He even counts PGA Tour player Ian Poulter among his many fans. We recently had an opportunity to chat with Sam Horsfield, who was with his golf coach J.C. Deacon at the time, and here are some of the insights that he provided. BYRANDYSCHULTZ,JUNIORGOLF
