TOUR PROFILE WinternationalSeries BeginsAgainatPinehurst T he tradition continues, as November marked the start of the 24th consecutive year for the eight-tournament Winternational Junior Golf Series. Created for high school age boys and girls, the tour- naments are all played at the famed Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in North Carolina. They are contested over 36 holes, on week- ends between November and March. This is a very inclusive series, as the competitions are open to all serious junior golfers enrolled in high school. Since 1994, over 2,800 competitors have competed in more than 200 Winternational tournaments. Members pay a nominal membership fee and a “per event” entry fee, which guarantees them entry to any and/or all of the events in the series. Past members include major champions Dustin Johnson, Jason Dufner and Webb Simpson, among others. A large percentage of members go on to play collegiate golf, and their memories of Pinehurst are many. All results of these events are emailed to the major golf outlets, many daily newspapers and a number of college golf coaches. A season-long points race based on top finishes by the individual participants keeps the competition simmering from the very first tournament. Divisional play- ers of the year are recognized by the Winternational committee, and the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) also awards them a perfor- mance-based star. The Junior Golf Scoreboard and the Carolinas Golf Association recognize this series, as well. The Winternational series has scheduled play for five Pinehurst courses this season. Included in the rotation is Pinehurst #2…twice. This legendary Donald Ross gem will host the US Amateur in 2019 and, in 2024, the U.S. Open, which will be the fourth time in the past 25 years. So, for serious high school golfers, this “home of American golf” should provide its own special thrills.
