Bianca: Our house is right in front of a golf course. Mylene:Our backyard faces where the women and the girls tee off. Since Bianca was four she would always watch them, so we decided to get her some golf clubs and that's how she got started. JG: Bianca, you’ve played a lot of tournaments this summer and you’ve had a very exciting year. Mylene: When she won the local championship in Stuart, we got all the invitations for the tours in 2016. And we said we want to participate in all of them to see what it's like. JG: Bianca, what did you like most about traveling overseas? Bianca: Seeing all the different landmarks and the people. JG: Did you make some new friends too? Bianca: Yes, we made friends at Woodhall Spa and at the World Championship. We made friends everywhere. JG: Are you able to keep in touch with some of them? Mylene: We are texting... most of them are in the U.S. And those in Europe we stay in touch with by e-mail. JG: Bianca, what do you think you've learned the most from playing golf? Bianca: That even though you're a great golfer there’s always room for improvement and you have to keep practicing. Mylene: When we're competing the goal is to win, but it was also to have fun and enjoy ourselves, because all the tournaments were in new cities and countries. For example, at the Venice Open we were surrounded by vineyards...it was interesting to be surrounded by that as we were playing. Bianca: No two holes are alike, no two courses are alike. JG: Mylene, tell me about your role as Bianca’s caddy. Mylene: Even though we are playing 9 holes two to three hours at a time, as a mom I let her be a child. If she wants to take an extra five minutes playing the bunker, I let her do that, or looking at the birds or the wildlife wherever that may be. It was great because we spent a lot of time together this summer and we learned a lot about each other. JG: What kinds of challenges did you face on your travels? Mylene: When we went to Woodhall Spa, our luggage went missing, so Bianca didn't have her clubs. USA Kids and the pro shop fitted her for a loaner set right away, and everyone was so amazing. And Bianca came in second! She was so calm about the whole thing, not flustered at all. And everyone was so kind everywhere we went! I was so impressed. They knew we were foreigners and they wanted to make us welcome and let us know they were happy we were there. JG: So what comes now? Mylene: Since Bianca did well, we've been invited to play many tournaments again next year, so we're busy planning our trips for 2017 – it’s very exciting and we can't wait! And we wish Bianca and Mylene all the best and safe travels! JuniorGolfTravelstheWorldwith MomandDaughter BY LORRIE WEHR, JUNIOR GOLF R ecently Junior Golf received a wonderful letter from golf mom Mylene Gibbs and her 8-year-old golfing daughter, Bianca. The Coral Springs, Florida junior won the 2015 US Kids Stuart Local Tour Championship and was then invited to play in the State, Regional and World Championships as well as the British Kids Championship and the Venice Open tournaments. While at the World Championship at Pinehurst, North Carolina, Mylene and Bianca saw copies of Junior Golf magazine that had been provided for the golfers and picked up a copy. “I found the magazine to be full of useful infor- mation,” related Ms. Gibbs. “I am also Bianca’s caddie and the tips come in very handy. I will defi- nitely share the magazine info with Bianca’s golf buddies.” And the story gets even better. While traveling through Europe, Mylene took photos of Bianca showing off her Junior Golf magazine at many famous landmarks, from Woodhall Spa in Great Britain to the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame in Paris, the Colosseum in Rome and more. Intrigued, we gave Mylene and Bianca a call to find out more about their golfing adventures and to learn what golf means to them.
